What is the PentaScore?
The PentaScore is a performance index between 0 and 1000. It places every pentathlete, from beginner to world elite, with a single number.
Inspired by international standards such as the ITRA index in trail running, it compares performances from different competitions, taking their difficulty and context into account.
The calculation
Your performance is more than your finishing place: it is compared with a theoretical elite standard worth 1000 points.
- 1 Raw performance: time or points
- 2 Comparison with the world standard
- 3 Weighting by age of result
- 4 Final score out of 1000
The weighted average
Your official PentaScore is the weighted average of your 5 best performances over the last 36 months.
Results less than 12 months old count 100%. After that, their weight gradually decreases.
Level scale
| Score | Level | Category |
|---|---|---|
| > 825 | International elite | World Class |
| 750 – 825 | National expert | National |
| 650 – 750 | Advanced (regional) | Regional |
| 500 – 650 | Experienced | Regular |
| 300 – 500 | Intermediate | Intermediate |
| < 300 | Beginner | Novice |
How to improve your PentaScore?
1.Consistency
Build up at least 5 results. If some are missing, your average drops.
2.Pick your races
Choose competitions where you can perform at your best. Avoid racing back to back when you are tired.
3.Refresh your scores
Replace results older than 12 months with recent performances, which count 100%.
